A Virgin Islands Diving Vacation

Join Juliet on the scenic waterfront of Charlotte Amalie harbor in St Thomas for a unique Caribbean diving vacation. Once everyone has boarded, the first dive sites are just minutes away. The south side of St Thomas features some excellent wreck diving. Miss Opportunity, W.I.T. Shoal and W.I.T. Concrete are among the best dives in the area. The shallow reefs also hold many surprises. Spotted Eagle Ray armies swim about the reef, flamingo tongues decorate the soft corals, eels, huge snappers, groupers,  and lobsters abound! After exploring the dives of St. Thomas, set sail for Cane Bay on St Croix and dive the dramatic walls, a few more wrecks, and the Frederiksted Pier, a world class night dive. Take your time and find many exotic creatures such as sea horses, frog fish and juvenile octopi.

Diving with Squirrelfish on the Rhone, British Virgin Islands, BVI vacationsDeparting US waters, we then sail for the British Virgin Islands. These beautiful and romantic islands are full of history and diverse attractions. You will be constantly surrounded by the towering green peaks of the islands as we sail through Sir Francis Drake Channel. For the divers and snorkelers, the wreck of RMS Rhone is a famous wreck that has over a century of coral growth. This is another world class night dive. On the adjacent Salt Island, you can visit the salt pond and visit the cemetery where many of the souls lost in the Rhone wreck are buried. Reef dives such as Black Forest, Spyglass wall and Pelican Island Reef drop off from the edges of the islands providing beauty at every depth. The diving here is great for beginners as well as the more seasoned underwater adventurers.

Sailing and Exploring the Virgin Islands

Between dives there are some spectacular land excursions. The Baths on Virgin Gorda is the premier attraction of the Virgin Islands. The Baths feature a virtual landslide of huge granite boulders that cascade down a hillside to the water’s edge. You can walk the easy trail that meanders over, around and under these boulders which create unique grottos where the surf washes in and out. The trail ends at a beautiful hidden beach where you can take a relaxing dip in the Caribbean Sea.

For those who enjoy some night life, the British Virgin Islands are without equal for fun and unique evening destinations. Willy T’s is a lumber schooner that has been converted to a bar and restaurant permanently anchored in the Bight of Norman Island.  Every evening locals, cruisers and tourists converge on this hot spot in their dinghies to dance the night away. Foxy’s Tamarind bar on Jost Van Dyke has been an extremely popular spot for decades as well. With a little luck, Foxy himself may get up and play his own unique style of music. The Soggy Dollar Bar is a great little bar to visit during the day on the pristine beach of White Bay on Jost Van Dyke.

The Virgin Islands are a wonderful vacation destination with something for everyone. Visit them in style on a classic schooner with a sense of romance that matches the storied history of these islands.

Water Temperatures

Water temperatures in the Caribbean don’t fluctuate as much as in the Bahamas or Florida Keys. There is around a 5 degree difference between winter and summer, but summer temps aren’t quite as warm as Bahamas either. We recommend a 3mm suit for whatever season in the Virgin Islands – better to bring it and not wear it than not bring it and wish you had!

[table]

Months Temperature Recommended Wetsuit
Dec-Apr 77-80F (25-27C) 3mm full suit or shorty
May-Nov 80-83F (27-29C) 3mm shorty or skin
